Complete each problem below by hand. Show your work and provide a reason for each step. Calculators are not allowed on this assignment.
- In this chapter you explored how to find a line of best fit using your calculator. However, it is important to understand how our calculators find this equation. Explore the Honors Topic below and use it to answer the following question. Note that the formula used is derived by minimizing the distance between each data point and the line of best fit.
Honors Topic: Linear Regression
A researcher is exploring the number of dogs caught for a certain city employee over a specific week and collects the following data.
Dogs Caught
Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 5 | 5 | 6 |
Using the method in the notes above. Find the best fit line for this data. Use this to approximate how many dogs will be caught on the following Tuesday (two days after Sunday). You should not use a calculator.
- Systems of linear equations are powerful tools in mathematics and everyday life. Solve the following problems using the techniques reviewed in Section 1.4.
Rahul, a coach at a local school has collected data on his players. But in an accident he lost how many games each player participated in. He knows that per game Michael played 30 minutes, had 1 foul, and 2 goals. Per game, Sherry played 25 minutes, had 1 foul, and 5 goals. Rashad played 20 minutes, had 2 fouls, and 4 goals per game. Rahul also knows that the total amount of all three players. Together they played 370 minutes, had 20 fouls, and 58 goals. Can you use algebra to determine how many games each athlete played in? (Show all work by hand, no calculators, justify/explain your steps and reasoning).
